Winter is tough on voices. Cold air, dry heating and bugs flying around can leave your voice feeling tired, tight or croaky. Here are four simple things you can do to keep your voice healthy and happy this season.

1. Hydrate (more than you think you need to)
Your vocal cords need moisture to work efficiently. Central heating dries them out fast so aim to sip water little and often throughout the day. Warm drinks are great but balance tea and coffee with water to avoid dehydration.

2. Always warm up before you sing (or talk a lot)
Cold muscles don’t perform well and your voice is no different. A short, gentle warm-up helps your voice feel freer, stronger and more reliable. Even 5 – 10 minutes can make a huge difference to how your voice feels and lasts.

3. Avoid straining, shouting or constant throat-clearing
If your voice feels rough, resist the urge to push through or clear your throat repeatedly. This actually irritates your vocal cords more. Swallow, sip water or do a gentle hum instead. Treat your voice kindly – it will thank you.

4. Support your immune system
A healthy body supports a healthy voice. Prioritise sleep, fuel yourself well and don’t ignore early signs of illness. If you’re run down, your voice will be too. Rest is not lazy – it’s vocal care.

Your voice is not just sound. It’s part of you. Look after it this winter.
